- Terrain: north and south highlands extending from Ethiopia, eastern coast descends into coastal desert, northwest is hilly terrain, and southwest has flat plains.
- Climate: hot and dry along the Red Sea coast, central highlands are much cooler and wet, it is dryer in the hilly and plain areas.
