Located on the Central American isthmus, the Republic of Costa Rica is situated between Nicaragua and Panama. The entire country is spread over an area of 50,895 square kilometers with a total of 1,290 kilometers of coastline and it is one of the most ecologically diverse regions on the planet. Population of Costa Rica is around 4 million and official language of the country is Spanish. More than 90 percent of Costa Ricans are Roman Catholics. The principal currency of the country is Colon. Costa Rica is primarily a tropical country with distinct climatic zones.
Costa Rica is a part of the Pacific “Rim of Fire”. Seven of the 42 active volcanoes present in the Isthmus are located in Costa Rica. Apart from that, there are several other dormant or extinct volcanoes causing earth tremors and small quakes that rock the country intermittently.
