Aviano has been inhabited since the 900s but there is evidence to show that humans were present here even before the Roman came to this place in 186 BC. Many historians agree that Aviano developed with a commercial center located where the present day Aviano is situated and, a cultural and defense center in the castle area (Castello d’Aviano).
Until the 1420, Aviano belonged to the Proto-Christian Catholic Church of Aquileia, a small Roman town located on the Adriatic Sea. There after it became part of the Venetian Republic. Aviano became part of Italy only in 1866.
