What Climate Regions Are In Tanzania
Tanzania is located in central East Africa and close to the equator. It has a tropical climate which does not vary much in the different seasons of the year. However, as the country has a varying topography, the climate in the different regions is largely dictated by the topography. For example, the weather in the highlands and near Mount Kilimanjaro is relatively colder than the rest of the regions. The summers fall between the months of November and February and the winters fall between the months of May and August. The country has two major rainfall seasons. One comes between December and April and the other between October and December. |
The central region of Tanzania is the Singida and Dodoma regions. These areas are semi arid and have hot and dry climate. The rainfall here is less than 500 mm annually. As against this, the Northeast and Southwest regions are mountainous areas and have a much cooler climate. Mount Kilimanjaro is located in this region which is the highest mountain of African continent. The highest parts of the mountainous areas can have freezing temperatures all thought out the year, especially at nights. In the peak winter months of June and July, the temperatures at night can fall below 15 degree Celsius. Tanzania has a 1424 kilometers long coastline along the Indian Ocean. The coastal regions of Tanzania namely Dar es Salaam, Tanga, Limdi, and Mtwara, have a hot and humid tropical climate. The average temperature all year round ranges between 25 °C and 30 °C. In contrast, the Northern and Western regions of the country have the highland plateau. Here the climate has relatively less humidity with a more temperate climate. The summer months see the temperatures ranging from 27- 30 °C and the winter months of June and July at 20°C- 27°C.
