Located in the Pacific Ocean, the country of Japan is a large archipelago stretching over 1,900 miles and comprising of more than 3,000 islands. Also known as the ‘Land of Rising Sun’, Japan has the world’s second largest economy in terms of GDP and is a world leader in electronics and technology.

Apart from technological advancements, Japan is also a tourist’s paradise. The country has a diverse geography with four major islands accounting for 97 percent of the land area. These islands include Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu and Shikoku. Among these, Honshu is the largest one and is economically and culturally the most important one. Both the major cities of Japan, Tokyo and Kyoto, are located on this island. Most land in Japan is mountainous with several dormant and active volcanoes. Among these, Mount Fuji is the highest peak in Japan and is also an active volcano. Only a small percentage of land is available for agriculture and human habitation.
Buddhism is the chief religion in Japan. There are around one million Buddhist shrines in Japan that are well-acclaimed for their beautiful architecture and their pristine surroundings. Some important temples in Japan include KinKaku-ji and Ryoanji Temple in Tokyo and Todai-ji Temple in Nara. Another popular tourist destination is Mount Fuji. Surrounding Mount Fuji many other popular tourist destinations like Fuji Five Lakes, hot springs, Open Air Art Museum at Hakone and the castle at Odawara are located. Japan also consists of several beautiful gardens and national parks that are an indispensable part of Japanese culture and lifestyle.
