Earlier, air travelers were permitted to travel across Mexico under the condition that their passports were pending but that rule has now been ruled out. Post some terror attacks in the US and other countries; the law has been toughened since January 2007 with subject to the immigration procedures. The government officials have declared that, along with a passport, a government issued identity card such as your driving license, and a proof of citizenship is mandatory for flying to Mexico.
Passport will also help you in bank and credit card transactions while you are traveling in Mexico. Usually, if you are traveling as a tourist, the Mexico government offers a tourist card which suffices as your Visa; however, if you are traveling to Mexico for other purposes such as, education, job or business activities, then you will have to apply for a Mexican Visa. Normally, the tourist Visa is valid till three months from the date of issuance. Earlier, for U.S. citizens, the Government of Mexico required the proof of citizenship, and photo identity card for entry in Mexico. But now, passport has been made compulsory for them as well.
