Thousands of years ago, Japanese fans were made from materials like paper, feather, silk or palm leaves. What many people do not know that the folded paper fan was first created in Japan and then introduced into China in the 11th century.

Even after so many centuries, there are many people all over the world who want to learn how to make a Japanese fan. Japanese fans are sometimes used for decorating a home and if you go to buy these fans, they can be rather expensive. That is why it makes sense to learn how to make a Japanese fan yourself.

How to make a Japanese fan:
Here is a technique to make a simple Japanese fan. Once you master it, you can go ahead and make more complicated designs.

  • Circular fans are the easiest to make and you can make them in any color.
  • Purchase a designed paper. Cut out the shape you want and attach it to a chopstick or a long ice cream stick
  • To make a folded Japanese fan, take some bright colored wrapping paper. Fold the paper carefully until the entire paper is folded. Use a stick tape for binding one end of the fan, and viola your Japanese folded fan is ready.
  • To give your fan a more Japanese touch, use a paintbrush and paint a few Japanese symbols and letters. Make sure that the color used for painting the symbols and letters is either black or gold. You will be amazed at the results!
