There are primarily two types of Japanese traditional dance forms and they are Odori, which originated in the Edo period, and Mai, which originated in the western part of Japan. Odori has grown out of Kabuki drama and concentrates on male sentiments while Mai is performed in rooms and not on the stage.

Kyomai or Kyoto-style dance is a variation of Mai. It was developed in the 17th century during the Tokugawa cultural period and is greatly influence by the sophistication and elegance of the Imperial Court in Kyoto.

Another Japanese traditional dance is Obon. In Japanese it is called Bon Odori. This dance is performed by people during the Obon festival which is held every summer in Japan. Obon is annual Buddhist event where the people commemorate their ancestors. It is believed that during the Obon festival, spirits of the ancestors return to earth to visit their relatives.

Sparrow dance or Suzume Odori is a Japanese traditional dance based on the fluttering movements of the common tree sparrow. It was first improvised by the stone masons who were constructing the Sendai Castle for Date Masamune. This dance is performed every year in Sendai and Miyagi prefectures during mid-May at the Aoba festival.
