Us Tourist Visa Extension
A US tourist visa is usually valid for six months. However, some unexpected reasons may pop up during your stay in the US because of which you may want to extend your stay. In such cases, you need to apply for an extension in your US tourist visa. |
The form I-94 which you get along with your passport stands as a proof of the duration of your stay in the US. Hence, make sure to apply for visa extension at least four to six weeks before the expiry date given on your I-94 form.
The US immigration officials should be convinced by the reason you state for the extension for your visa. If the US government officials are not convinced by the reasons set forth by you, you might not get the extension. Hence, never claim for an extension soon after you reach US or they may think it to be a planned act.
Usually, the extension is provided on the grounds of your reason for the extension and the time asked by you. However, the maximum extension you can claim on your tourist visa is for one year.
For extension of stay, you will have fill form I-539. You will also have to pay fees for applying extension on your tourist visa which may include charges of your entire family, if they have joined you in your visit. You may be asked to submit your original form I-94 but, remember, not to submit your original documents. Always affix attested copies of all your documents. You will also have to submit photocopies of your passport, your bank statements, return air-tickets, and a letter stating the reason of extension.
